What actually makes a support chatbot useful (and what doesn't)

Got it — on it now.

Most support chatbots fail for a boring reason: they're built to sound conversational before they're built to actually know the product. Tone is easy. Accuracy is the hard part, and it's the part that actually matters.

The bots that hold up under real use are trained directly on your documentation, your FAQs, and your actual support history — not a general-purpose model guessing at your product from its name.

Just as important as what the bot answers is what it doesn't. A chatbot that confidently makes something up is worse than one that says 'let me connect you with someone' — the escalation path needs to be as well-designed as the answers.

Once it's live, the real work starts: reviewing what people are actually asking, finding the gaps in what it knows, and closing them. A chatbot that isn't reviewed after launch degrades quietly over time.
